Do you start sweating every time someone mentions GRIB files? Don’t worry — start by reading the article on weather models. Then, get familiar with these files using one of the following free software tools:
– OpenCPN : navigation software
– XyGrib : download and visualization software
– Squid : navigation software
Downloading GRIB files for free has become more complicated. Fortunately, it’s still possible to find GRIB resources. OpenSkiron provides GRIB files for the Mediterranean and Europe at 7/11/12 km resolution (5-day forecast) and 2 km resolution (2-day forecast).
You can also receive your GRIB files by email — still completely free thanks to Saildocs! You send an email to a server, and a robot automatically replies with the area of your choice attached.
To do this, simply use the example email below and replace the area in the message body with the one you want. You can find all available areas and models on the Saildocs website.
This system uses very little data, which is extremely useful at sea!
